Extraordinary Africa>Tanzania>Zanzibar>The Residence Zanzibar
When the Residence first opened, it brought something new to Zanzibar: an international standard luxury hotel from a brand much beloved throughout the Indian Ocean. Although access is via a pretty bumpy track, this brings a feeling of hiding away from the rest of Zanzibar and opening the gates into a luxurious haven.
What’s the Residence really like?
The Residence has 66 villas set in rows amongst beautifully manicured tropical gardens. All are incredibly elegant- decorated in a contemporary international style, with wi-fi, air-conditioning and satellite TV and each has a private pool. They’re either located further back in the gardens (Garden Villa) or looking out towards the ocean (Ocean Front- though views can vary from these villas) and have one bedroom (luxury villas) or two bedrooms (Frangipani Villas). There are also 11 “Prestige” Villas which have one bedroom and the best views of the ocean.
What can I do at the Residence?
The grounds at the Residence are pretty, and the beach is lovely, though it’s important to note that like most beaches on the island it’s very tidal, meaning when the ocean’s out at low tide you’ll be forced to fall back either on your private pool, or the infinity pool on the beach front- no hardship in our book! There’re also two restaurants, a lovely spa, tennis courts, a fitness centre, a kid’s club, and if you take a walk down the jetty there are hobie cats to take out, pedal boats, kayaks, and dhow cruises.
