Extraordinary Africa>Namibia>Fish River Canyon
Even in a country of extraordinary landscapes, Fish River Canyon is something special. It is the second largest canyon in the world with dramatic cliffs, spiky quiver trees, and an arid rockscape plunging down to the (almost) lush environment immediately beside the water.
Fish River Canyon is top of the wish list for serious hikers: during the cooler winter months the five day hike through the canyon is one of the most challenging on the continent- in summer the searing temperatures of the Canyon make it impossible. For something slightly less energetic, there are also some fantastic drives in the Canyon, 2-3 day hikes in the canyon, and short walks along the rim which you can do yourself.
