Where to go in Africa in May

Extraordinary Africa>The Africa Calendar>May

Your best beach bet at this time of year is Southern Mozambique– further north, Zanzibar and the Kenyan coast are still under the long rains- OK for safari, not so fun for an afternoon of baking on the beach!

If you’re heading further south in May, the light in Namibia can be gloriously clear, and the weather is fairly cool if you want to hike in Fish River Canyon.

May is the start of the lower season in South Africa, so it’s a great time to take advantage of special offers (and some slightly cooler weather if you’re not a fan of the heat!)

For safari, we’d generally head to Southern Africa at this time of year as Kenya and Tanzania can be torrentially wet. Meanwhile, in Zambia and Botswana, camps are throwing open their doors after the long rains- aim for the Okavango Delta outside peak season, or the wonderful camps in Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park.
