Where to go in Africa in October

Extraordinary Africa>The Africa Calendar>October

If we’re honest, you could go almost anywhere in Africa in October and have spectacular game viewing, but here’s where we’d pick:

October is our absolute favourite month for Southern Tanzania. The Selous and Ruaha are wonderfully dry- with animals flocking in from miles around to drink from the rivers.

Head to Botswana for spectacular game viewing, including huge herds of ellies looking for drinking water near the Chobe River.

Over in Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park, spend some time in a hide to photograph the spectacular carmine bee-eaters nesting in the banks of the Luangwa River.

For those doing a self drive safari around Namibia, this is the perfect time to park up at one of Etosha’s many water holes and watch the wildlife come to you. Book early (and by this we mean around a year in advance) to get a room in one of the best camps. While it may not be the most luxurious place you’ve ever stayed, the night time action at the waterhole is unforgettable.

Lastly, if a little R&R is more your thing, this is a dream time of year for Indian Ocean beaches- try barefoot luxury in Mozambique, private islands in the Seychelles, or glossy resorts in Mauritius.
