Why this safari works….
If ever a country called out for you to hit the open road, it’d be Namibia. Driving through ravishing landscape after ravishing landscape it’s hard to believe there could be so much variety in one country. If you want an unusual honeymoon or simply a road trip that you’ll never forget we can’t recommend Namibia highly enough. Take our car. Go tomorrow. Seriously.
MEET YOUR CAR, STOCK UP ON SUPPLIES in Windhoek (1 night). Spend a few hours getting to know your vehicle and enjoying a fine Namibian steak (Joe’s Beerhouse gets our vote) before your adventure in the morning.

DESERT LANDSCAPES at Sesriem and Sossusvlei (2 nts)…
Yes, Dead Vlei is really that beautiful, yes, your photos will almost certainly be that stunning. Wake up at dawn to climb Dune 45 (or, if you’re feeling energetic, Big Daddy) and watch the sun rise over the desert- magical. For an extra treat, try seeing sunrise from a hot air balloon.

SEALS, ADRENALINE & DESERT SAFARI in Swakopmund (1-3 nts)…
Driving north, it makes sense to break your journey at Swakopmund. Stop for a night and hit the road in the morning, or tarry a while to enjoy the dune boarding, sky-diving, kayaking (with seals), desert safaris and seafood that Swakop has to offer.

RUGGED BEAUTY, ROCK ART & DESERT WILDLIFE in Damaraland (2-3 nts)… Damaraland’s right at the top of our list of seriously beautiful places in Africa, where big skies meet stunning rockscapes and desert elephants stroll along the riverbeds. Plus, there’s ancient bushman rock art too. Something for everyone.

SERIOUS SAFARI in Etosha National Park (3-5 nights)… A safari in Etosha is the pinnacle of the Namibian wildlife experience. It’s designed around waterholes so you can simply park up, and wait for the wildlife to come for you. Or, take a safari guide who’s an expert in the wildlife to show you round. Stay in one camp, or better still try two- perhaps one inside the park and one on a private reserve. Or one each side of the park.

MAKE BREAKING THE JOURNEY PART OF THE FUN in Central Namibia (2 nts)… Head back to Windhoek, but make this last leg of the journey special. Stop at the amazing AfriCat Foundation at Okaukuejo to track the big cats or stretch your legs with some hiking in the Waterberg Mountains.
ONE LAST NIGHT in Windhek (1nt)… before you head home, with a memory card bursting with spectacular photographs.
Other ideas for your African adventure….
Extend your trip to take in the watery wonderland of the Caprivi Strip for a complete change from the desert (if you have long enough, add in Victoria Falls) or spend a few days in Cape Town at the end of your trip. Hikers should also consider at trip to Fish River Canyon.
Make your trip extraordinary by….
Taking a scenic flight over the Namib Desert from Swakopmund, spending a night at Okaukuejo in Etosha overlooking the legendary waterhole or spending a night sleeping out under the stars- try Doro Nawas in Damaraland or add a stop at Tok Tokkie Trails.
When to go…
We’d probably say, that on balance May-October were the best months for this trip. Out of season rainfall is relatively low, so it’s certainly still do-able, we just need to pick places more carefully.
