Okaukuejo Resort: The Lowdown

Extraordinary Africa>Namibia>Etosha>Okaukuejo Resort

If you want to stay overnight inside Etosha National Park, Okaukuejo has one of the best waterholes in the park. We’d challenge you to go to bed when there’s a non-stop parade of animals outside!

What’s Okaukuejo Resort really like?

Like many of Namibia’s government run camps, Okaukuejo is a lot simpler than luxury lodges outside of the national park and standards of food and service aren’t quite as high. However, Okaukuejo is a fraction of the price of some of these places, and has a location second to none, on the southern edge of Etosha and overlooking an active and busy floodlit waterhole, which provides a seemingly endless selection of wildlife. There’s a campsite and around 100 rooms, only a handful of which actually overlook the waterhole (the 5 premier waterhole chalets), but you can visit the waterhole from whichever room you stay in.
Closest to the main restaurant and pool area, there are the 45 smallish double rooms with ensuite bathrooms, then there’s 20 bush chalets also with 1 bedroom but these have an additional small lounge and private braai area outside. The two larger family chalets have 2 bedrooms, a braai and a kitchenette, and close to the waterhole are the 1 bedroom waterhole chalets. Finally, overlooking the waterhole itself are the premier waterhole chalets which have a double upstairs bedroom and a twin downstairs bedroom, both ensuite and a small downstairs seating area.
It’s worth noting that if you’d like to be able to cook your own braai, this is only feasible in the bush and family chalets and we’d recommend bringing your own supplies including firewood as the shop in camp generally has limited supplies. There’s also a restaurant serving simple, homely food, a bar, swimming pool, a small shop and a petrol station for those travelling by car.

What can I do at Okaukuejo Resort?

Guests at Okaukuejo usually do game drives in Etosha with their own hire car, but for an additional fee, it’s also possible to book onto daytime or night time game drives with guides from the lodge. Anyone staying at Okaukuejo should also spend some time at the waterhole. This is a fantastic place (one of the best in Africa we’d argue) for seeing black rhino come to drink at night, but the diversity is simply incredible, with ellies, giraffe, zebra, springbok and oryx to name but a few!
