Lion Sands River Lodge is a fresh, airy and modern-feeling safari lodge in one of the best game viewing areas of South Africa.
What’s Lion Sands River Lodge really like?
The beating heart of River Lodge is the main lodge- in front lies the Sabi River, the pool and the River Deck, to either side are the rooms. There are 20 rooms in all, primarily luxury rooms. These are pretty and comfortable, with high thatched ceilings, creamy white walls and a peaceful, natural feel. Views are out over the bush and there’s a deck to sit on with a book on a quiet afternoon. Slightly larger are the superior luxury suites, which also have outdoor showers- a particular favourite of ours. Some of these are interleading, so work well for families on safari. Last of all are the River Suites, tucked away and private, again with outdoor showers, and the best view of the river (again one of these is set up for families on safari).
Although you’re very much out in the wilds here, South African safari lodges tend towards the feel of mini hotels in the bush (albeit with a 4 legged visitor or two) so you’ve got a surprising number of modern conveniences on hand should you want them- there’s a spa, a gym, a pool for afternoon dips, and wi-fi in the main lodge. Meals are mainly eaten in the main lodge and are plentiful- make sure to loosen your belt before you come! You may also find yourselves eating candlelit dinners out on the main deck, or in the traditional boma.
What can I do at Lion Sands River Lodge?
When we last visited we were extremely impressed with the game viewing around Lion Sands- you’ll primarily explore on morning and late afternoon/evening game drives- times for these will vary throughout the year depending on whether you’re trying to avoid chilly winter mornings or the blazing midday sun in summer. We were also pleased to see that River Lodge limits passengers to 6 per game viewing vehicle.
You can also do bush walks from River Lodge- we’d heartily recommend these, not so much as a way of seeing the wildlife, but for an in-depth immersion into the wilderness. Last of all, for an extra fee, we can arrange a night in one of the treehouses here- magical!
Giving back at Lion Sands River Lodge…
Many staff at the lodge come from some of the less privileged areas around the park, and your stay directly helps to benefit the children, women elderly of these areas through the More Community Trust- to see the work in action we can arrange a visit to the local community as part of your stay at Lion Sands River Lodge. If you want to get involved we can heartily recommend the Pack for a Purpose website which can give you a list of much-needed contributions to bring out with you.
