Extraordinary Africa>South Africa>Madikwe>Morukuru Farm House
There are very, very, few lodges in Africa that we feel we can unreservedly recommend to almost anyone, but Morukuru Farm House, an exclusive private house in the Madikwe Game Reserve, is one of them.
What’s Morukuru Farm House really like?
Morukuru Farm House is a stylish, contemporary-feeling 5-bedroom house built around a courtyard. All of the rooms are the same size -no squabbling over the biggest bedroom here- and decorated in a light, natural, almost Scandi style. It’s designed to feel like your own home in the bush, so there’re several comfy seating areas, a big dining table (both indoors and out), and you’re more than welcome to pop your head into the kitchen, or even have a cooking lesson.
Outside there are lovely lawns, a fire pit, and a pool to splash in. Plus, the homestead is set within a 100 hectare fenced-in area, reducing the worries about your children sharing the swimming pool with elephants!
Morukuru Farm House has a team of 8-10 staff who are on hand to run the house according to your personal tastes and schedule- there are no regimented menus or game drive times here. There is wifi, though we should say this is still the bush, so the bandwidth may not handle non-stop streaming from lots of devices at once – a good opportunity for family bonding!
Families at Morukuru Farm House:
The Morukuru houses are probably some of the most family friendly properties in Africa, making them a dream choice for a family safari. The beauty of having your own game drive vehicles means that activities can be tailored to your children’s schedule and food catered to their tastes. Younger children get a special activity backpack, and there’s a whole range of adventures just for them- from baking, to archery and fishing and much more. Unusually for a safari lodge we can also arrange babysitting here as an optional extra- please let us know if you would like more information on this.
What can I do at Morukuru Farm House?
One of the (many) things that makes a stay at Morukuru Farm House so special is that you have total flexibility in your activities. With the guide and vehicle there just for you, you are free to explore at your own pace. There are game drives around Morukuru area and in the Madikwe Game Reserve, catch and release fishing in the Marico River, and heading out on the dam for tubing or water skiing.
It’s also possible to do walking safaris at Morukuru- you definitely don’t see as much game on foot as you do in a vehicle, for obvious reasons, but each wildlife sighting is thrilling, and it’s a fantastic way to learn about the bush in greater depth. Bush walks are for children over 16, and over 60s should bring a doctors certificate of good health with them. For younger children, walks in the fenced in area where there is less in the way of the more dangerous animals is also an option. If that all sounds a touch energetic, Morukuru can also arrange massages. Lastly, if you are feeling adventurous, Morukuru Farm House can also arrange a sleepout in their hide.
Giving back at Morukuru Farm House:
The Morukuru Goodwill Foundation supports both the local community in Molatedi Village and projects in Madikwe Game Reserve. There’s a major focus on protecting Madikwe’s rhinos, but Morukuru also helps support research and expensive emergency operations that fall outside the park’s budget. Morukuru are also members of Pack for a Purpose, so if you have space in your luggage to bring supplies please let us know!
If you would like a more hands on “Safari with a Purpose”- please let us know- for guests staying at least 3 days we can arrange involvement with things like elephant collaring or rhino notching, a tour of the projects supported at the school and an insider talk with one of the of the local researchers. We need to book this in advance, so please let us know if this is something you are keen on.
