Perched on the cliffs of Hermanus with sweeping views over Walker Bay, The Marine is one of South Africa’s most iconic seaside hotels. It’s a place where the ocean feels close enough to touch, and where whale sightings from your bedroom window are not just possible, but common in season.
What’s The Marine really like?
The landmark white building sits right on Hermanus’ famous cliff path, a privileged position that gives it uninterrupted views of the bay and the dramatic coastline beyond. Just on the right side of classic seaside glamour for us, the hotel’s public areas, from The Sun Lounge & Bar to the sea-facing terraces, are designed to make the most of the setting. Inside, the atmosphere is one of understated luxury. There are 40 rooms in total ranging from Doubles to Premier Suites that have a separate lounge. All have pretty generous ensuites and benefit from king sized beds, air conditioning, underfloor heating (important for winter) and some have sweeping sea views and private balconies from which to enjoy them.
Breakfast was a bit of a highlight for us. Set up in the The Pavilion restaurant (that also serves dinner) you can sit inside or follow us outside to the terrace overlooking the bay with a selection of pastries in hand.
What can I do at The Marine?
While The Marine has a sophisticated, grown‑up feel, it is welcoming to families. Children are accommodated comfortably, and the surrounding area offers plenty to keep younger travellers entertained—from beach days and rock‑pooling to boat trips and nature walks.
As Hermanus is famously one of the world’s best places for land‑based whale watching (between June and December you can often spot Southern Right Whales right from the hotel), this, and heading out on a boat trip for the chance of a closer look, is the most obvious of activities. But there’s plenty more, from cliff‑path walks down to the tidal pool, wine tasting, kayaking, shark‑cage diving and browsing the boutiques and galleries of Hermanus. Closer to home there’s also a heated saltwater pool, the Carchele Spa with a variety of treatments on offer and a small gym.
Giving back at The Marine:
The Marine forms part of The Liz McGrath Collection which supports local charities, champions responsible tourism and invests in environmental stewardship—from reducing waste and supporting local suppliers to participating in conservation‑focused programmes along the Cape coast.
