The Old Rectory: The Lowdown

Extraordinary Africa>South Africa>Garden Route>The Old Rectory

The Old Rectory is a heritage coastal hideaway deeply rooted in its surrounds. Just a minute’s walk from Wedge Beach in Plettenberg Bay, it’s a national monument transformed into a charming hotel – perfect for travellers who want character, comfort and easy access to the Garden Route’s best bits.

What’s The Old Rectory really like?

Built in 1777 as a Dutch East India Company barracks and later used as an Anglican rectory, it’s the oldest surviving building in Plett and now a Provincial Heritage Site. The restoration is remarkable: exposed stone walls, yellowwood trusses and milkwood‑shaded gardens sit alongside contemporary South African art and thoughtful design details. One lovely touch: the pattern of an antique plate found during restoration has been printed onto the backs of the dining chairs.
There are 18 suites, divided between pool suites and garden suites. Light and bright with splashes of colourful artwork or throws, each has a private outdoor space, king‑sized beds and generous bathrooms. Pool suites have terraces, open‑plan ensuite bathrooms with freestanding tubs; garden suites have enclosed bathrooms and small private gardens. The set up works beautifully for couples and families, with interleading options, accessible pool suites and a layout that suits both relaxed holidays and longer stays. There’s Wi-Fi, air con, hairdryers and underfloor heating in every room.
The main areas include a sparkling saltwater pool surrounded by decking interspersed by trees and loungers, a tranquil spa housed in the old schoolhouse with treatment rooms and a steam room, and a bar‑lounge with exposed stone walls. Restaurant 1777, with its exposed brick walls contrasting with crisp white linen tables, serves all meals and is open to the public (so it’s worth booking in high season) with menus shaped around Garden Route produce and the building’s heritage. There’s outdoor seating for long, lazy lunches, and the team provide thoughtful extras: complimentary sunscreen, beach umbrellas, chairs, towels and picnic arrangements for days on the sand. During high season, there’s also a complimentary shuttle into town. Days unfold gently: beach walks, Robberg Nature Reserve hikes, ocean safaris for dolphins and seasonal whales, forest trails, wine tasting and long afternoons by the pool.

Giving back at The Old Rectory:

The hotel’s contribution to heritage conservation can’t be underestimated here. However, it’s not just about looking back but looking forward with an emphasis on local employment, skills development and community upliftment, with the kitchen and spa championing local suppliers and artisans.
