Serian is an old-school safari camp with an excellent location in the Mara North Conservancy and a commitment to giving guests private safari vehicles.
What’s Serian really like?
As soon as we first arrived at Serian we loved the sense of peace, in a secluded valley overlooking the Mara River. You’re out of the hustle and bustle of the central reserve and there are just five marquee-style tents. Each has a large bed, colonial-style furniture and natural bush colours, and through a canvas wall, an ensuite bathroom. One of the tents is a family tent, with two “bedroom” tents joined together by a shared living area. The overall feel isn’t particularly flashy or glitzy, but it is traditional and desperately romantic, with more than a hint of Out of Africa.
Further up the hillside, the main mess feels wonderfully cosy and is full of interesting things to look at- owner Alex’s family have had a long history in Africa. We should also stress, there is no WiFi here- there is a running joke that the camp dog is called WiFi, so if you ask for WiFi, this is who you’ll get!
What can I do at Serian?
Serian is run very much as a bush camp, with a real emphasis on the game viewing rather than too many frills (though it is most definitely comfortable). Guiding is generally very good, and in particular, one of the main reasons we’d book Serian is that they try to ensure that guests have their own vehicle. This is a serious luxury in an area where many camps have 6 people to a safari vehicle. As you are away from the restrictions of the public reserve, night game drives are also available.
For something a little more active, there are walking safaris, and you can also try fly camping as part of your stay- sleeping out in a simple camp immersed in the incomparable luxury of the Kenyan wilderness. Or, there’s the chance to do a sleepout in Serian’s treehouse, The Nest– just let us know if you are keen as both this and fly-camping need to be booked in advance. Lastly, for an extra fee, we can arrange a dawn hot air balloon safari over the Mara.
Giving back at Serian:
Serian was amongst the founder members of the Mara North Conservancy, a project that aimed to ensure the long term protection of habitat for wildlife, and enduring benefit to the local community, who receive rent for the land.
