Set right on the banks of the Talek River looking out towards the Mara Reserve, Tipilikwani is a good value, mid-range camp with comfortable luxury tents.
What’s Tipilikwani Mara Camp really like?
The heart of the camp is the large main area, tucked under a high thatched roof. Here you’ll find the jolly bar, a few comfortable sofas to curl up on, and the dining area. There are also a few tables and chairs on the lawn outside, looking out towards the river. From here, stone pathways lead to the guest tents. These are comfortable, glamping-style tents with ensuite bathrooms to one side. This gives the tents quite a solid, permanent feel, rather than the more rustic options found elsewhere in the park, so this makes Tipilikwani a nice option for those who aren’t sure about going too wild and woolly! With 20 tents, it’s fair to say that Tipilikwani is a little larger than many of the camps that we use in the Mara, but this is one of the things that helps it to be such excellent value.
There’s also a curio shop, a swimming pool if you want to take a quick dip in between game drives, and wifi (and who doesn’t want to show off their first lion photo?) We would stress, however, that wifi in the Mara is not the same as in central London, or even Nairobi, so it’s worth being patient and not expecting too much from it!
What can I do at Tipilikwani Mara Camp?
Activities at Tipilikwani focus on morning and afternoon game drives in the public Mara Reserve– just so that you’re aware, it’s a short drive in and out of the reserve as you need to get across the river! Game drives are usually shared with other guests. These are normally open vehicles with up to six guests on a vehicle. There’s also the chance to arrange community visits to the nearby village. For an extra fee, it is also possible to arrange a dawn hot air balloon flight over the Mara, followed by a champagne breakfast. Just let us know if you’d like to do this as it needs to be booked in advance.
