Extraordinary Africa>Kenya>Masai Mara>Wild Hill
Special without ever being showy, Wild Hill is both deeply remote and quietly rarefied. Perched on Kileleoni Hill – the highest point in the Maasai Mara – this contemporary, low‑lying private villa blends into the hillside, its living grass roofs disappearing into the landscape. But whilst it may be designed to stay hidden from sight, from the inside, Wild Hill looks out onto one of the most extraordinary panoramas in the Mara. There’s wildlife to watch during the day, and twinkling lights of the Maasai villages at night.
What is Wild Hill really like?
Accessed via a discreet door in the hill and via a tunnelled walkway, Wild Hill reveals itself slowly. The vast main area includes a dining space, bar, cocktail bar, wine cellar and a library‑cum‑museum filled with artefacts and natural history pieces. Interiors are layered and textured, rich with African references that are refined rather than rustic. Outside, a wide terrace leads to an infinity pool and hot tub with sweeping views across the valley, along with a boma for evenings around the fire. The wellness offering is unusually extensive: a treatment room, sauna, salt bath, cold plunge, gym, rooftop yoga deck and even a pickleball court – a pretty unique indulgence in these parts.
Wild Hill sleeps 10 adults across five standalone suites, each more like a private villa than a bedroom. Nabo is the dedicated family villa, with two en‑suite bedrooms and generous shared living space. Are, Uni, and Ungwan are standalone suites that can be configured as doubles or twins (each accommodating an additional child’s bed if required). Inside, you’ll find deep bathtubs, fireplaces, wide verandas and quiet corners for reading or watching wildlife drift past.
Dining is a highlight: fresh, seasonal dishes served in a mix of settings: long lunches under the trees; candlelit dinners and relaxed breakfasts with the valley spread out below.
Families at Wild Hill:
Children of all ages are welcome, but Wild Hill works best for tweens and teens. The terraced layout make it less suited to very young children, but families with older kids will find it exceptional: space to spread out, private guiding, and a team who will tailor each day’s activities to the guests’ ages and interests.
What can I do at Wild Hill?
Activities include game drives, walking safaris, foraging walks, photographic sessions, scenic helicopter flights (at an extra fee) and horse riding. The location is superb as you’re close enough to reach the Mara’s great wildlife areas easily, yet far enough from busier pockets to feel wonderfully secluded. Wildlife is outstanding: big cats, elephants, plains game, and, in season, the drama of the migration.
Giving back at Wild Hill:
Wild Hill operates with a light footprint, using solar power, careful water management and low‑impact materials. Through Futures in the Wild, the team supports conservation and community empowerment across the Mara. Initiatives include regenerative grazing projects, education programmes, and Women in the Wild, where women from neighbouring communities create beadwork, soap, candles and seedlings that support both livelihoods and land restoration.
