Extraordinary Africa>Tanzania>Karatu>Plantation Lodge
Plantation Lodge is a gorgeous little lodge, set amongst the coffee plantations and farms in Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Highlands. In this gorgeous area the soil’s a deep red and the hills are lush and green. Maasai warriors stride beside the road, and the climate’s wonderfully cool.
What’s Plantation Lodge really like?
There are sixteen rooms and suites set amongst the tropical gardens, and decorated in colonial style, with thick white-washed walls, polished stone floors covered with woven rugs, and mosquito nets sweeping down over your bed. This is a farmhouse rather than a purpose-built hotel, so each room’s slightly different, but in general, the suites tend to be larger, with a better view. All of the rooms are lovely though, and they’re surrounded by tropical gardens. There’s a small pool, which can be delightful if you’ve come off a particularly dusty game drive, a restaurant, and a bar for the ubiquitous end of day sundowner.
What can I do at Plantation Lodge?
This is a homely, welcoming, and cosy base from which to take game drives to both Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater, and if you have longer to spare, you can also arrange a visit to one of the nearby coffee farms for a view into rural life in Tanzania.
