Anna of Zanzibar: The Lowdown

Extraordinary Africa>Tanzania>Zanzibar and Stone Town>Anna of Zanzibar

Anna of Zanzibar’s one of those hotels that we’d been hoping would spring up on the island for years: small, utterly laid back, but something of a step up from Zanzibar’s more rustic beach lodges. Somehow nothing ever quite made the grade, so when this little gem opened back in 2010 we were delighted.

What’s Anna of Zanzibar like?

Anna is the epitome of barefoot luxury, with just five thatched villas, all beautifully designed in a laid-back, low-key way. The villas have tons of space- anyone living in a studio flat in London or New York will be positively wallowing in the bedroom, sitting and dressing room. All have air-conditioning in the bedroom, and three of the villas have a/c in the sitting room too, meaning they can be used as an extra bedroom if needs be.
Anna’s villas are set amongst pretty tropical gardens, facing out onto mile upon mile of white sandy beach. In fact, this is one of the very best beaches on Zanzibar. All of the island’s beaches are tidal, so there’s also a freshwater swimming pool for those who want to take a dip when the ocean’s too far out. The main house is a colonial style building, perfect for evening drinks, an afternoon snooze with a book, or your evening meal (if you’re not eating by the pool, in your room, or down on the beach).

What can I do at Anna of Zanzibar?
The lodge can arrange tours for you to go out and see the island (spice tours and visits to Stone Town are our favourite), but for most people Anna is enough all by herself- a dip in the pool, a nap in a beach side gazebo, and a wander along the shore, and another busy day is over and done with.
