What to do and Where to Stay in Rural Malawi: Highlands and Tea Plantations

Extraordinary Africa>Malawi>Highlands and Tea Plantations

It’s fair to say that relaxing on Lake Malawi is the great draw for visiting the country, but for those who have longer to explore, rural Malawi is a delightful place to explore.  Head to the Thyolo and cycle through villages and tea plantations, or visit Nkhotakota for a secluded wilderness retreat. Adventurers can head up Mount Mulanje, while high on the Zomba Plateau you’ll find tumbling mountain streams, and some challenging hiking trails.

Accommodation in this area is generally on the simple side (with a few honourable exceptions) – a visit to rural Malawi is more about enjoying the place you are in, and the incredibly friendly people that you’ll meet, than being pampered in 5* luxury. Remember this and you’ll have a magical time.
