Pure Likoma, Likoma Island: The Lowdown

Extraordinary Africa>Malawi>Lake Malawi>Pure Likoma

We are incredibly excited about Pure Likoma. It’s a brand new lodge owned by Andrew, the original builder of legendary Kaya Mawa also on Likoma Island.

What’s Pure Likoma really like?

There’s a beautiful treehouse and a beach house, which both have a thoroughly Robinson Crusoe feel to them. They’re utterly unique, built from old boats and recycled local materials.   This has an incredibly peaceful, barefoot feel, with friendly dogs pottering around, tumbling bougainvillea, and plenty of sand to dig your toes into.  Outside on a small peninsula is the bar – this is occasionally cut off from the mainland which makes for an exciting post-drink return to bed, so a wooden footbridge is being put in place.

What can I do at Pure Likoma?

This is the sort of place you might potter around taking boat trips, sailing dinghies, snorkelling (please take local advice on bilharzia before swimming anywhere in Lake Malawi) long walks on the beach and exploring the local villages. If you have space in your luggage, we’d absolutely recommend a visit to Katundu, a workshop with an amazing range of textiles and interiors pieces, all made locally and often from recycled materials. If only we could bring home a tree trunk coffee table in our luggage…
