Rwanda>Lake Kivu>Lake Kivu Serena
The Lake Kivu Serena is a large hotel on the outskirts of Gisenyi, on the northern shores of Lake Kivu. It’s a popular weekend hangout for residents in nearby Goma and Kigali, and makes a pleasant spot for a little relaxation after a gorilla trek.
What’s Lake Kivu Serena really like?
The Serena has 66 rooms and suites, including a large number of family rooms. All rooms have satellite TV and ensuite bathrooms as well as balconies looking out over the grounds or the lake. The suites are a little larger and have their own sitting room and verandah. Décor’s fairly traditional and inoffensive- it probably won’t win any interior design awards any time soon, but it is comfortable. The restaurant serves a good mix of international and African-influenced food and there’s a gym, tennis court, watersports centre and a large swimming pool above the beach. In all- as with many international-standard hotels of this size, while the Serena isn’t bursting with boutique charm, it’s a great option if you want somewhere easy, comfortable for the Lake area, and with plenty to do.
What can I do at Lake Kivu Serena?
Most of our guests come here for a peaceful night or two of relaxation after gorilla trekking, though at an absolute pinch, with a long drive you can use it as a base for visiting Volcanoes National Park. We’d probably use our time here to snooze, read a good book and maybe potter around on the lake.
Giving back at Lake Kivu Serena:
As befits a lodge run by the Aga Khan Foundation, the Lake Kivu Serena takes its responsibilities to the local community seriously, supporting the local orphanage and hospital, and buying produce from a widows’ co-operative. The Serena also runs an employee wellness programme to help improve the health of the hotel staff.
