What to do and Where to Stay in KwaZulu Natal

Extraordinary Africa>South Africa>KwaZulu Natal

KwaZulu Natal’s often described as a perfect South Africa in miniature and it’d easily be possible to spend your entire holiday here. Driving north from the subtropical city of Durban you’ll find glossy beach resorts in Umhlanga Rocks petering out into mile upon mile of wild and rugged coastline. Here, the St. Lucia wetlands offer some of the finest diving in South Africa, with passing whale sharks, floating rays, and loggerhead and leatherback turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs.

Heading inland there are a number of fantastic game reserves, and incredibly moving memorials to the Boer and Zulu wars in the Battlefields. Here, watch a pile of stones and an empty expanse of land spring to life as your guide describes the heart-wrenching and heroic tales of battle. The proud traditional Zulu culture survives to this day, and there are a number of options for visiting the local community while you are here. Last, but not least, the glorious Drakensberg mountains provide some of the finest scenery and hiking in South Africa.
