Extraordinary Africa>South Africa>KwaZulu Natal>Montusi Mountain Lodge
We try to avoid having favourites, but if we’re honest, our personal favourites have always been a source of heated debate. Montusi Mountain Lodge, without doubt, deserves a very high ranking in our hall of fame. It’s by no means 5* (except in the hospitality and views where we’d give it 6* or more). Montusi is an excellent homely, home-run 4* lodge- an inch more fuss would ruin (in our humble opinion) its absolute magic.
What’s Montusi Mountain Lodge really like?
Montusi Mountain Lodge has 16 cosy homely suites, each with their own sitting room which has a TV to snuggle up in front of and a fire to keep you warm. There’s also proper coffee- and tea- for the mornings, always a mark of a good host in our book. Oh yes, and the views- they’re pretty ravishing too. We slept with the curtains open and couldn’t have asked for anything more beautiful to open our eyes to. Mountain Suites are slightly larger than the Garden Suites, and the family suites have two bedrooms both with their own bathroom.
The main lodge at Montusi has a cosy alpine feel. There’s a sitting room where tea’s served every day, a dining room, an outdoor pool, and a small upstairs area where you can have a massage with a bit of advance notice. And when you see how good the hiking is here, you’ll probably be tempted to walk further than you ever thought likely and be seriously in need of a massage afterwards!
What can I do at Montusi Mountain Lodge?
In addition to the numerous hikes in the area, there’s also fly fishing, mountain-biking, tennis, horse riding for all levels and an outdoors activity centre a short drive away from Montusi.
Giving back at Montusi Mountain Lodge:
Renewing and restoring the local environment is part of Montusi’s very existence. Planting indigenous trees has brought back the local wildlife, and now this largely degraded environment is a conservation area.
