Why this safari works…. While places like the Masai Mara might be pretty well known, Turkana and the far north are way, way off the beaten track. The tiniest fraction of tourists visiting Kenya ever make it deep into the northern frontier country, so you have an utterly wild, unspoilt and authentic adventure through some incredible scenery and amidst some fascinating local communities. We’ve tried to give you some idea of the itinerary below, but to be honest, adventures in this part of the world are unpredictable- this is one for the romantics and the seriously intrepid!
To MARALAL- 1 day
Meet your land cruisers and follow adventurers early this morning and set off up through the Rift Valley to Nyaharuru. Break the journey for a picnic and stretch your legs at Thompson’s Falls, before arriving mid afternoon in the dusty, buzzing town of Maralal. This is real, rural Kenya-the former home of legendary explorer Wilfred Thesiger, site of some great bars, colourful markets and the best nyama choma in Kenya (or so we’re told…)
Early this morning continue on into the arid wilderness of northern Kenya. Stop for coffee and ravishing views at Loisiolo Escarpment before continuing on spend a couple of nights in Desert Rose. After the heat and dust (or mud- depending on the weather!) of the road the poo,l is something of an oasis here and hikes through the forest of the sacred mountain are just breathtaking.
To LAKE TURKANA 1 day
Today, after your long journey, the final destination is in sight. Head from the clear air of the hills down to the arid shores of Lake Turkana, the Jade sea. Stretch to be the first person in your vehicle to spot the water, watch flocks of flamingos contrasting splendidly with the deep green of the water and local communities herding their goats, seemingly unchanged for centuries. Spend a magical night here under the stars in a fly camp.
To DESERT ROSE- 1 day
After your night of adventure wake up on the baking shores of Lake Turkana. Explore the area and later this afternoon depart head back to the refreshing cool of Desert Rose.
No trip to Kenya’s complete without some serious wildlife, so this morning you’ll set off early with a picnic lunch and some much needed cold drinks to drive along the Ndoto mountains, down into Samburu National Reserve. Even in a trip of such stunning scenery this drive remains a very special one indeed. Game drive through the reserve to your overnight stop, looking out for ellies turned a deep red by the Samburu soil, striking reticulated giraffe and long-necked gerenuk reaching into the bushes for tasty leaves.
For once- a leisurely start! After breakfast game drive back through Samburu National Reserve and from here continue back to Nairobi where you can head back to the airport or continue on elsewhere in Kenya.
Other ideas for your African adventure…. We think that if you’re the sort of person that’s doing this kind of trip, you’re probably something of an adventurer, so we’d probably recommend somewhere equally special. A spot like the Chyulu Hills would be a soothing contrast to the dust and heat of the far north, and is as wonderful in it’s own way. Or head for one of the luxury safari camps in the Masai Mara for some big game viewing and a bit of a post-adventure treat!
