Rwanda>Nyungwe Forest>Nyungwe House
Nyungwe House is one of the most luxurious places you can stay in Rwanda. It sits perched in a tea plantation, around 6 hours away from Kigali by road, or a shorter helicopter ride to the lodge’s helipad. When we stayed it was markedly one of the smarter lodges in Rwanda, feeling more like a luxury hotel than a rustic bush lodge.
What’s Nyungwe House really like?
Nyungwe’s main house is a large and beautiful building, with floor-to-ceiling windows the dining and sitting rooms. Wrapping around the front of the building there was a pretty terrace where we ate breakfast and lunch, and within the sitting room had a fireplace crackling away each evening (it gets cold up here in the hills). Food when we stayed was reasonable, and was slightly more fine dining than many places we’ve been in Rwanda. Outside, there was a small gym and swimming pool, and an excellent spa, and since Nyungwe House has been taken over by One & Only, we have great hopes for the spa. Outside there are 6 wood and stone villas, housing the 22 rooms. These are split level, airy and very comfortable, with a deck outside facing into the forest, and fireplaces to warm the chilly mountain evenings.
What can I do at Nyungwe House?
Most guests who come to Nyungwe House come to visit nearby Nyungwe Forest, where there is excellent birding and hiking and a large number of monkeys. Also a canopy walk which is beautiful, but possibly not for anyone afraid of heights- as your poor reviewer can attest. You can also do chimp trekking in the forest. This is a bit of a drive away, while sightings are not guaranteed, it’s still a lovely hike. It’s also possible to visit the tea plantations and explore by mountain bike, so this makes quite a nice “active” stop in a trip, though to be honest, a lodge of this calibre could equally work really well as a spot to relax in for a few days at the start or finish of a Rwanda trip.
