Anakao Ocean Lodge is a breezy, barefoot beach retreat on Madagascar’s remote southwest coast, perfect for travellers who want wide horizons, turquoise water and a wonderfully unhurried rhythm of life.
What’s Anakao Ocean Lodge really like?
Set on a long sweep of white sand a short boat ride from Nosy Ve, Anakao Ocean Lodge feels blissfully far from the bustle of the mainland. The lodge sits right on the beach, with traditional Vezo fishing pirogues drifting past throughout the day. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, with palm thatched roofs, sandy pathways and a sense of space and calm that makes it easy to unwind. The main lodge includes a bar, lounge and open air restaurant overlooking the ocean.
Accommodation consists of a collection of 28 stone and thatch bungalows – doubles and larger family offerings sleeping 4 – and 1 suite, each with en suite bathrooms and private terraces. Décor is simple and coastal, with natural woods, soft colours and plenty of light. Some bungalows are set directly on the sand, while others sit slightly elevated for better views. The restaurant serves generous Malagasy and international dishes, with fresh seafood a highlight – lobster, grilled fish and coconut rich curries are regular favourites.
What can I do at Anakao Ocean Lodge?
The spacious bungalows lend themselves to families as does the long sandy beach and the relaxed, easy going atmosphere. Children love watching the fishing boats and playing in the sand. Optional activities you can arrange locally include canoeing, diving, fishing, and whale watching in season (roughly July- September). There’s also boat trips to Nosy Ve, a protected island known for its red tailed tropical birds, and a BBQ outing where you can set sail for a nearby island to enjoy a barbecue of fish caught and then cooked over a wood fire by your pirogue captain. The lodge can also arrange visits to local Vezo fishing villages, surfing lessons and excursions to Tsimanampetsotsa National Park for flamingos and other wildlife. There is also a small spa, a dive centre and plenty of quiet corners to read, nap or simply watch the tide roll in.
