What’s Welgelegen really like?
Welgelegen is a small and charming guesthouse built from two neighbouring Victorian villas joined by a central courtyard. Full of character and easy to love, it’s set in a great neighbourhood and overlooks a local school.
As befits a guesthouse of this style, all of the rooms are different, but we were charmed by all that we saw. They’re decorated with natural, mouse-coloured walls, have sisal matting on the floors, and have patches of colour here and there. There’s a small plunge pool in the courtyard and a couple of the rooms have private verandahs and outdoor sitting areas. We’d generally recommend the superior rooms, simply for size- the deluxe rooms are smaller and the mini-deluxe room is really pretty small.
There’s a dining room here serving breakfast, and there are several excellent restaurants in the neighbourhood (not to mention world class dining in the wider city of Cape Town) for your evening meals. In all we’d say this is a characterful and laid-back bohemian option that makes a fantastic base for the young and the young-at-heart exploring Cape Town.
