Extraordinary Africa>Madagascar>Western Madagascar
Beautiful Anjajavy has long been one of our favourite properties in Madagascar. This gloriously remote lodge is a taster of all that is wonderful about Madagascar.
What’s Anjajavy Le Lodge really like?
Anjajavy sits on its own private nature reserve, with a glorious range of habitats from dry forest with ancient baobabs, mangrove forest, glorious beaches and spiky tsingy. There are sifakas dancing across the lawns at tea time, glorious fish eagles and tiny chameleons amongst a huge array of extraordinary wildlife.
The 24 villas are beautifully made of rosewood. Downstairs is the bedroom, bathroom and sitting area with huge windows looking out onto the terrace outside. The hammock is a particularly lovely touch and it would be easy to spend hours gently swinging away listening to the ocean. Upstairs some villas have a mezzanine which can be used as a second bedroom. While all villas are similar, it is possible for a supplement to stay in one of the Premium Villas which has a slightly more private location- the boardwalk does pass quite close to several of the villas which we didn’t find a problem, but did notice. Outside is the beach and a large salt-water swimming pool. We were impressed by the food here. Meals are generally very good, and are definitely influenced by Madagascar’s historic links with France. A particular delight is afternoon tea in the oasis.
What can I do at Anjajavy?
One of the things that makes Anjajavy so special is that during a stay here you can have a taster of so many of the things that make Madagascar magical. There are catamarans, kayaks, and windsurfers you can use, as well as badminton and volley ball. There are some fabulous walks to take in the spiky tsingy, lemurs, amazing birdlife and baobabs, visit giant tortoises, or take a night walk through the forest. For a fee you can try water skiing, wakeboarding, fishing, and boat trips- we especially loved heading out to one of the islands for a picnic.
Giving back at Anjajavy Le Lodge:
Water for the rooms is heated by solar, and wherever possible they try to reduce plastic waste. What little is produced is recycled into building bricks. Anjajavy is also involved in a huge number of community projects from building a secondary school, to providing an on site clinic for local villages.
