Amakoro Songa: The Lowdown

Rwanda>Volcanoes National Park>Amakoro Songa

Amakoro Songa is a charming, modern, eco lodge just a short distance from Volcanoes National Park HQ.

What’s Amakoro Songa Really Like?

Set amongst pretty, manicured gardens, the lodge looks out towards three volcanic mountains. There are eight pretty cabin-style cottages, with big light windows, a fairly modern décor and chunky wooden furniture. They also have their own fireplace- we should warn, it gets pretty chilly up here, so please make sure to pack some warm PJs!

There’s an outdoor firepit, and over in the main building there’s another communal fireplace where you can chat to other guests and show off your gorilla photos. Here, there are comfy sofas to curl up after a long day of trekking, and a bar and dining table, though when it’s warm enough, food is served out in the gardens. Food is fresh and wholesome, though not overly fussy, and many of the veggies are grown in the gardens.  Sweet though the lodge is, it’s really the staff here that people fall in love with as they really do their utmost to ensure you feel well looked after. Boots caked in mud will come back gleaming (sometimes, awkwardly, cleaner than when you arrived) and you can arrange a footrub for aching feet.

What can I do at Amakoro Songa?

Almost all of our guests who come to Rwanda will be here to trek the mountain gorillas. However, most people will have some downtime in addition to their hike. Amakoro has close links with the local community and can organise community walks for you, with perhaps a chance to chat to local residents or join in with some traditional dancing, though we’d warn you this is pretty energetic!

Giving back at Amakoro:

Deforestation has been a real problem across Rwanda and Amakoro has been encouraging guests to take part in their tree planting programme to help restore this fragile environment.
