Victoria & Alfred Hotel, Waterfront: The Lowdown

Extraordinary Africa>South Africa>Cape Town> Victoria & Alfred Hotel

A great mix of history and modern luxury, The Victoria & Alfred Hotel is situated right on the V&A Waterfront.

What’s the V&A really like?

The hotel has 94 rooms, divided into three categories: Piazza-facing, Mountain-facing and Loft rooms. The Piazza-facing rooms put you right above the hustle and bustle of the waterfront, while the Mountain-facing ones offer stunning views of Table Mountain—definitely the pick if you’re after those iconic Cape Town vistas. The Loft rooms are up in the eaves, with charming sloped ceilings and a cosy feel. Décor is elegant but neutral tones-it’s not overly flashy but instead speaks softly, which works well with the historic character of the building. The rooms are spacious, with big arched windows (in its former life adding a touch of character – and ventilation – to the otherwise utilitarian structure) that let in loads of natural light. There are of course a line up of all the essentials: free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, a fitness centre and even a spa at its sister property nearby. There’s also a lovely outdoor terrace where you can relax with a drink and soak up the Waterfront atmosphere. The on-site restaurant, Ginja, gets a lot of love for its fresh, locally inspired dishes. It is also where breakfast is served with views of the harbour which is a pretty special way to start your day. And of course, being right in the heart of the V&A Waterfront, you’ve got shops, restaurants and attractions literally – as cliched as it sounds – on your doorstep.

What can I do at the V&A?

Named after Queen Victoria and her son, Prince Alfred, today’s waterfront is mighty popular with overseas visitors but we’re pleased that it remains a favourite shopping and socialising spot for locals too (with the slightly hipster but still brilliant Oranjezicht farmers market right next door). Enjoying views over the working harbour and onto Table Mountain (whilst its omnipresent in the city, this one of the best spots to take in this majestic landmark and its fluffy ever-moving tablecloth in full), the V&A was a warehouse in the 1900s but has since undergone a transformation into a sophisticated hotel.
