Kicheche Laikipia Camp is small and perfectly formed, one of just a handful of luxury tented camps on the beautiful Ol Pejeta conservancy. We love it for the comfort of the camp, the chance to spot rhino and the brilliant range of safari activities on offer.
What’s Kicheche Laikipia really like?
Kicheche’s six luxury tents are designed to face onto a natural waterhole, so unless it’s a very dry year and the water vanishes, there’s normally something exciting to be seen from the camp. Tents are comfortable and spacious, and we particularly enjoyed gossiping around the campfire at the end of the day, and the evening meal in the mess tent. Food’s good, but it’s wholesome and hearty rather than gourmet cuisine.
What can I do at Kicheche Laikipia?
A particular delight of staying on Ol Pejeta is the activities. Kicheche Laikipia offers both day and night game drives, giving you the chance to spot some of the more unusual nocturnal animals (leopard in particular). There’s a research programme into the lions, (you can help with radio tracking them) and there are walking safaris (great for an in depth immersion into the wilderness). When there’s water, there’s a small canoe that guests can take out on the dam in front of camp, and if you’re feeling fit there are also mountain bikes. Mountain-biking safaris are the latest way to get out and about on safari, and are absolutely brilliant, not only for the chance to burn off all the delicious safari food, but also for the feeling of really being part of the bush outside.
Giving back with Kicheche Laikipia:
Kicheche’s staff are a (self-named) team of “environmental evangelists”- the camp runs off solar power and efforts to “reduce, re-use and recycle” are impressive. Kicheche Laikipia is also involved in supporting the local community: in Laikipia the Kicheche Trust makes a particular effort to look after children affected by HIV/AIDS and support the Nanyuki Children’s Home, an orphanage in desperate need of food supplies, toys, and money for school fees.
