Kifaru House is a cosy, charming lodge set on a hill on the excellent Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. It exemplifies what makes lodges in this part of Kenya feel so special. It’s rustic, stylish and relaxed, but with everything done very well.
What is Kifaru House really like?
The main lodge is a sprawling homestead with tidily manicured lawns under spreading trees, a high thatched roof, and a fireplace to curl up by on cold highland evenings. Life flows between indoors and outdoors as the weather permits, and we’d be surprised if there’s a straight line anywhere in the building- everything feels very organic and natural. Meals are often eaten at communal tables and staff are very warm and friendly. Outside there’s a swimming pool (we should warn Lewa is at a reasonably high altitude so you may not be that tempted in the winter months) and five guest cottages. As with the main lodge, these are made of gnarled wood, stone and thatch. Furniture is a mix of antiques and locally crafted items, and there are charming 4-poster beds. One cottage can be used as a family room- it has a double and twin room, both ensuite. They don’t interconnect and have their own entrances, so this may not work for young children.
What can I do at Kifaru House?
One of the nicest things about staying on a conservancy rather than in a public park, is the huge array of things you can do on Lewa. Game drives are a given, and we’ve had many recent guests comparing game viewing in Lewa to the Mara – high praise indeed! In particular, this is a great place to see rhino (Kifaru means rhino in Swahili). There are also bush walks and as an optional extra you can add on horse riding, night game drives, camel rides on the conservancy, and a visit to the Il Ngwesi cultural boma.
