Ol Pejeta Safari Cottages, Laikipia: The Lowdown

Extraordinary Africa>Kenya>Laikipia>Ol Pejeta Safari Cottages

The Ol Pejeta Safari Cottages are the brainchild of Andy and Sonja Webb, veterans of the safari industry, and their expertise certainly shows in the lovely experience they’ve created.

What’s Ol Pejeta Safari Cottages really like?

Set in a remote area of the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, there are just four safari cottages. Moja Juu and Moja Chini are both one-bedroom cottages, hidden away in the bush. These two cottages have a shared kitchen hidden away back of house where the chef looks after both cottages.  Mbili and Tatu are both a little bigger, with two ensuite bathrooms. They’re fairly close to each other, so could even be booked together for a larger group. Both cottages have their own kitchen and private chef. The cottages are built as a lovely hybrid of ranch house and safari camp, with verandahs to sit out on, lots of gnarled wood, but huge canvas openings that unzip to let the outside world in. Each operates as a standalone unit, with its own sitting and dining area, plus private guide and vehicle, so this is great for people who want the feel of their own personal hideaway in the bush. Rooms are run on eco-friendly power, with solar electricity and natural bath products.

What can I do at Ol Pejeta Safari Cottages?

Activities here include game drives, with your own private guide and safari vehicle (a rare treat on a Kenyan safari), as well as night drives. As you’re operating on your own schedule you can also have meals out in the bush, and also try some walking safaris. In addition to the activities run by the Safari Cottages, there are also lots of options arranged by the Ol Pejeta Conservancy (these are generally at an extra cost). You can visit the very last northern white rhinos in the world at their boma, and also visit rescued chimpanzees in their sanctuary. While we’d stress these aren’t wild animals and visiting them is not a wilderness experience like the rest of the safari here, they are still pretty special to see. Should you wish to make longer trips further afield, it is also possible to arrange day trips to the Aberdares and Mount Kenya from here for an extra charge.
