Extraordinary Africa>Kenya>Masai Mara>Mara Plains Camp
Lovely Mara Plains is a top end luxury camp in Olare Motorogi, one of the Mara’s most beautiful conservancies.
What’s Mara Plains really like?
Guests arrive into camp via a small suspension bridge over the river. It’s got a cosy, intimate feel with just six suites, and an open-sided main area which looks out over the plains. The décor throughout is quite traditional and colonial, with tents raised up on polished wooden decks, antique furniture, red rugs and comfortable leather sofas. The rooms have a similar style, with thick Lamu doors, fans spinning above the beds and a beautiful copper tub in the bathroom. The Jahazi Suite is a two-bedroomed suite with a private dining area, and comes with its own game drive vehicle so is ideal for guests who prefer a little privacy.
We’ve said this is one of the most luxurious camps in the Mara, and it absolutely is, but it’s important to be aware this is understated safari luxury so please come with that expectation in mind- you won’t get some of the things you might well find in a city hotel or a generic resort. Mara Plains is all about atmosphere, charming staff, lovely food, great guides and a location in one of the best wildlife viewing spots in Africa.
What can I do at Mara Plains?
Activities here (of course) focus on morning and afternoon game drives in the camp’s open-sided landcruisers. As the owners are photographers, vehicles have been designed with photography in mind. Unusually, for this part of the world, Mara Plains also includes the use of a professional camera set with a longer zoom, and binoculars for you to use during your stay. Guides are very flexible and try not to operate to set schedules, which really helps you to make the most of your game viewing. As well as your game drives on the conservancy, you can also head into the main reserve for a dawn hot air balloon flight (there’s an extra fee for this) and pay a visit to the local community.
