Extraordinary Africa>Kenya>Masai Mara>Sand River
Elewana Sand River is a luxury tented camp in what we think is probably the prettiest part of the Mara, overlooking the grasslands of the Northern Serengeti. It’s perched beside a small river (known as the Sand River as it’s quite shallow and mainly sand at the end of the dry season).
What’s Sand River really like?
Sand River Camp has 16 tents, so it’s on the larger side compared to many of the camps we work with, but it has been cleverly designed so that it can be split into two smaller camps, each with their own mess tent. The tents have a distinctive colonial feel to them- think oriental rugs, four poster beds and leather bound trunks. Bathrooms have a lovely indoor bathtub and an outdoor shower- if you’re travelling in winter our top tip is to shower during the middle of the day! One of the tents is a family tent, with a double and twin tent joined by a sitting area. All of the tents are fairly strung out (several are over a small footbridge) so please let us know if you have any mobility challenges so we can request a tent with less walking for you!
The communal areas of camp have a similarly traditional feel to the tents, with cosy armchairs, chandelier style lighting and crisp white table cloths at mealtimes. These are often served outside when weather allows! In the evenings, after dinner, you will be escorted back to your tent as animals roam freely through the camp. Lastly, Sand River has a small swimming pool which can be a real treat on a hot and dusty day.
What can I do at Sand River?
Sand River’s location in the Masai Mara Reserve places it in one of the best locations on earth for game viewing. As a result, there’s a clear focus on morning and afternoon game drives. Game viewing year-round in this area is very good, and you’re in a prime location for catching the wildebeest migration as it comes up from Tanzania. While the reserve is often busier than the conservancy areas, Sand River is located away from the main river crossing points, so it definitely has a quieter location than other camps in the reserve. It is possible to visit the local community outside the reserve as part of your stay here, and we can also arrange hot air balloon flights as an optional extra- just let us know if you’d like to book these as they need to be booked in advance. If you don’t mind a very early start, these are a great way to begin the day!
