Sanctuary Ngorongoro Crater Camp: The Lowdown

Extraordinary Africa>Tanzania>Ngorongoro Crater>Sanctuary Ngorongoro Crater Camp

Sanctuary Ngorongoro is a comfortable tented camp tucked away on the quiet northern side of the Ngorongoro Crater. As the park itself is inevitably rather busy, it’s nice to be hidden away here.

What’s Sanctuary Ngorongoro like?

This is a fairly traditional safari camp and we’d stress probably not somewhere to come for high tech modern design.  The ten tents have been built in a classic East African style, raised up from the ground on decking. Each has a little verandah in front, which makes a nice spot to relax in (if you have time – this is a camp that often guests barely see in daylight hours as they’re too busy down in the crater).  There’s also an ensuite bathroom and shower. If you’re staying during the cold winter months of July and August please pack warm clothing for the overnight stay as it can get close to freezing at this altitude.

The main area consists of a sitting and dining tent, also raised up on deck, beneath the spreading acacia trees.  Meals are usually served at individual tables.

What can I do at Sanctuary Ngorongoro?

Typically our guests will arrive here with their own vehicle and guide who will conduct game drives into the Ngorongoro Crater, but it is also possible to stay here on a “game package” basis and do shared game drives using the camp vehicles.  One of the great joys of staying here is your excellent position for nipping down into the crater ahead of the crowds in the morning, but it’s worth being aware that, as you are deep in the acacia forest, there is no view of the crater from camp.
