The Highlands is part of a new breed of lodges breathing serious style into the Tanzanian safari scene. The lodge is made up of a series of geodomes, the first we’ve seen on safari anywhere in Africa. You’re tucked away in the forest behind the wall of the crater, giving you the chance to explore this incredibly remote area just a short drive from the crater itself.
What’s the Highlands really like?
There 8 rooms, with a chic modern African design, light and airy to the front and with en suite bathrooms to the rear. There’s a cosy wood burner (it gets cold up here) and wi-fi in the rooms if you need to check in with home. The main area is a series of 3 domes comprising a sitting room, bar area and dining room, and there are decks where you can sit out and brave the chill for sunrise or a (warmer) sunset.
What can I do at the Highlands?
It’s worth mentioning here that you are around 40 minutes drive away from the Ngorongoro crater for game drives, but we think it’s worth it to be in such a lovely area. Plus, this opens up a whole range of activities that you don’t get to experience on the crater rim: hiking Empakaai Crater, and the Olmoti Volcano, as well as visits to the crater and experiencing local culture away from the more touristy areas on the crater rim.
