Set in the sleepy village of Usa River, Mt Meru Game Lodge has been in the von Nagy family since the 1950s. It was built originally as a family home, and slowly evolved into a lodge. Today it retains a distinctive colonial feel, with a lovely shady terrace, and low-rise buildings with painted stone floors and corrugated iron roofs. The overall feel is simple, but cosy and rustic, with meals eaten outside when the weather permits and a crackling fire lit in the evenings.
What’s Mount Meru Game Lodge really like?
The 18 bedrooms are all outside in cabins and cottages scattered amongst the gardens. All of the rooms are simple, but have four poster beds, ensuite bathrooms, and wifi. There’s a huge array of formats, including family and interconnecting rooms. The gardens themselves are lovely, with tall shady trees and fluttering birdlife. In the grounds beyond is the wildlife sanctuary with some zebras, buffalo and ostrich as well as a rather elderly croc. We’d firmly stress that this is not a safari experience, the animals are generally here as a result of rescue and some are in enclosures, but nevertheless, they can provide an interesting distraction- especially for children, and there’s also a swimming pool to burn off steam on hot afternoons.
What can I do at Mount Meru Game Lodge?
Most of our guests who stay here are generally taking a moment to catch their breath before or after a flight, so quite often we find that people will just relax rather than going out and about. However, should you wish to explore, the lodge can help arrange a tour of local coffee farms, a game of golf, and guided walks around Usa River.
