Extraordinary Africa>Tanzania>Mainland Coast>Ras Kutani
Ras Kutani’s one of those lodges that gently beguiles you, until you’re so horizontally relaxed, it seems virtually impossible to move. Life here is slow and laid-back- if you need fast paced action or high-speed internet connection, think again. Ras Kutani is a place to do little more than potter around with a good book and a satisfied stomach and completely recharge your batteries.
Rooms at Ras Kutani:
The airy, open thatched cottages at Ras Kutani have large comfortable beds, and mosquito nets wafting in the gentle sea breezes. Wandering up the hillside you’ll find the suites with private plunge pools and the two-roomed Hill House, both of which have glorious views down to the Indian Ocean.
The Lodge at Ras Kutani:
In a country where the cuisine leans towards wholesome simplicity Ras Kutani is notable for the quality of food it serves. We loved the fresh seafood and spices, served under the stars as often as possible (look up- we’re told you can see a shooting star in Africa every 7 minutes…) Nearby’s the lounge, pool and bar -we made ours a G&T, but there’s a good selection of local beers, soft drinks and South African wines.
What can I do at Ras Kutani?
Many people come to Ras Kutani for a few days of relaxation after a safari or a long flight (we also think this is a fantastic choice for post-wedding recovery at the start of a honeymoon) but we could happily have stayed for a week. If you must tear yourself away from your hammock, there are wonderfully long walks to be had along the beach and in the forest, boogie boards and kayaks to borrow, and massages if moving sounds just too exhausting.
Feel good factor at Ras Kutani: The owners of Ras Kutani have long been committed to responsible tourism, using sustainable, eco-friendly building policies and aiming to employ and train staff from the local community at all of their camps. At Ras Kutani in particular they work to protect the rare coastal forest in which the lodge is located and help to protect nesting turtles from poachers- if you’re there during the season you can see their work in action.
