Chem Chem: The Lowdown

Extraordinary Africa>Tanzania>Tarangire>Chem Chem

Chem Chem is a beautiful and luxurious tented lodge set in the wildlife management area between Tarangire and Lake Manyara National Park

What is Chem Chem like?

The feel of Chem Chem is laid back and luxurious. Their ethos is very much that of “slow safari”, immersing yourself in the gorgeous natural environment and wildlife, while enjoying the excellent food, pool, spa and gym. There are 7 beautiful tented suites with large beds, indoor and outdoor showers, and a verandah to sit on and enjoy the view. There is also one family unit with 2 tented suites. One is a full double suite, and then connecting over a small wooden bridge, a second annexe tent with 2 single beds for children.

What can I do at Chem Chem?

Chem Chem sits close to Lake Manyara National Park but its land stretches right over to Tarangire. So, you can do sundowners overlooking Lake Manyara, and game drives over near Little Chem Chem (the concession for their sister camp) or even driving into Tarangire National Park.  We’d say that wildlife densities are probably strongest once you’re inside the National Park but out on Chem Chem’s concession, it’s wonderfully private and away from the crowds.

There are fantastic opportunities to meet the communities who live around the wildlife management area, and if you want to stretch your legs, you can walk or run with a Maasai warrior (be warned though, they move fast!) As an optional extra, it is also possible to add a balloon flight in Tarangire National Park – please let us know if you are interested so we can book this in advance. Lastly, the lodge can arrange massages, manicures and pedicures for you- these are always payable locally.

Giving back at Chem Chem:

Chem Chem protects an essential wildlife corridor in between Lake Manyara and Tarangire National Park, creating vital space for the wildlife to roam. They also support anti- poaching patrols to protect and monitor the wildlife. Supporting the local community is a vital part of this work, helping to provide a school bus, improving the fabric of the school and helping to provide English courses. They also fund wheelchairs for disabled local people and help to empower the local communities to run small businesses in order to improve their economic futures.
