Extraordinary Africa>Tanzania>Tarangire>Little Chem Chem
Beautiful Little Chem Chem is a stylish luxury safari camp in a private game viewing area outside Tarangire National Park. When it opened, it brought something rather new to Tanzania’s safari scene- the idea of a “slow safari”, gently immersing yourself in your environment rather than racing between game reserves and ticking off big-name animals.
What is Little Chem Chem like?
The camp certainly does its best to get guests to stay for as long as possible, with sweet welcoming staff, lovely food, and an atmosphere that makes guests feel utterly at home. The six tents are cosy and comfortable with a peaceful natural feel to them. They’re decorated in shades of stone and pale green, and have double or twin four poster beds. Tents have fans, not air-conditioning. The idea is to feel your connection with the bush: hence the telescope on the desk for spotting distant wildlife and outdoor showers for washing under the stars. One of the tents is a family tent which has two bedrooms, one double and one twin, each with their own bathroom.
What can I do at Little Chem Chem?
Activities at Little Chem Chem focus on game drives. The huge delight of being in this private area is the lack of other vehicles, and during the dry season in particular game viewing is often excellent. This is a vital wildlife corridor between Tarangire and Manyara, and this is a particularly good spot for seeing elephants.
For guests who are curious about visiting the public Tarangire National Park, it’s possible to pop in for a morning or a day of game drives. Back on the privacy of the concession, walking safaris can also be arranged, (if you’re feeling athletic, climbing the nearby hills for sunrise is spectacular) and further afield, it’s possible to visit one of the local schools. Lastly, for an extra cost, we can plan a dawn hot air balloon flight over the bush- just let us know if you’d like to do this as it needs to be booked in advance.
Giving back at Little Chem Chem:
Philanthropy sits at the core of the Chem Chem experience, and the Chem Chem association helps to protect not only this vital wildlife corridor between Tarangire and Manyara, but also supporting the local community. This takes the form of anti-poaching projects, measures to reduce human-wildlife conflict such as predator-proof bomas for livestock, providing courses in business literacy for local women and English lessons.
