If you are looking for an authentic, characterful stay in Stone Town, then Emerson on Hurumzi should be firmly on the list. It’s a renovated historic building, once home to Sultan Bargash, deep in the old streets of town, with an incredible sense of romance and charm.
What’s Emerson on Hurumzi really like?
There’s a lovely rooftop restaurant looking right out over town, winding stairs everywhere, lush plants and carved wooden latticing wherever you look. As you’d expect, each of the 9 rooms is different, but they’re all decorated with Zanzibar antiques, ceiling fans, traditional stone or carved wooden beds, and plenty of brightly coloured materials and paints. Broadly speaking though, the 2 suites tend to be a little larger than the 7 standard rooms.
As with every ancient building, Emerson on Hurumzi does very much come with its quirks. Stairs are steep and winding, the building is very rambling, and it’s pretty likely you are going to get lost on your way to/from the hotel at some point. Here in the heart of the old town there is a strong possibility you’ll hear the mosque, traditional Zanzibari music, or both. However, if you want a stay that is quintessentially Zanzibari, then this would a tough act to beat.
