Extraordinary Africa>Zambia>Lower Zambezi>Sausage Tree Camp
Your adventure starts before you even get to Sausage Tree, taking a boat safari from the airstrip into camp.
What’s Sausage Tree really like?
When you arrive, you’re welcomed into the beautiful main area, set on a big wooden deck right on the water. At one end, there’s a firepit for evening drinks and several comfortable chairs looking out over the Zambezi. Behind, there’s the lounge, dining area and bar, which are all open onto the deck. There’s also a beautiful infinity pool right next to the river. When we visited, we felt our eyes kept being drawn back to the water- there’s always something to watch- ellies pottering in the shallows, hippos spluttering, and birds darting around- it’s quite the distraction from the lovely food. A lot of care and attention is put into making sure guests feel completely looked after, and each tent has a staff member dedicated to taking care of you. We hesitate to use the rather grandiose term “butler”, but you get the general idea…
Guests stay in one of 7 luxury suites- these are very comfortable tents, each with their own private deck and plunge pool, large bathtubs to splash in and an incredibly romantic outdoor shower. There is also Kigelia House, which confusingly, is really more of a large tent, with two ensuite bedrooms sharing a central living room, deck and small pool.
What can I do at Sausage Tree?
One of the things we have always loved about the Lower Zambezi is there is so much to do. You can do day and night game drives (the latter are often good for spotting leopard), walking safaris, canoeing and boat trips. There’s catch and release fishing for Talapia and Tigerfish- you can do this at any time of year, but towards the end of the season- September to November, is really peak time. Birding out here on the river is just gorgeous too- there are around 500 species of birds in the park for twitchers to enjoy, and even novice birders will enjoy the brightly coloured bee-eaters and kingfishers.
