Extraordinary Africa>Zambia>South Luangwa>Chichele Presidential Lodge
Chichele’s one of those rare safari lodges that is both deeply rooted in Zambia’s history and effortlessly chic (which, if you’d seen the lodge 10 years ago, might not have been the words you reached for!) Perched high on a hilltop in South Luangwa National Park, its sweeping views, exceptional wildlife and comfort and craftsmanship place it among southern Africa’s most spoiling safari retreats.
What’s Chichele Presidential Lodge really like?
The brainchild of two experienced safari companies, Chichele Presidential Lodge opened in 2025 as a complete reimagining of former President Kaunda’s hideaway, built here in the seventies. Unsurprisingly, he bagged a fabulous location in the heart of the national park, so now the ten Vista Suites frame some of Zambia’s most spectacular views, with gorgeous decks to lounge on and private plunge pools that seem to float above the valley. Indoors, the suites are open plan with a bedroom and spacious bathroom with indoor and outdoor showers, double basins and bath, all fronted by tall glass sliding doors. In a departure from Zambia’s more traditionally rustic offering, the décor is contemporary, embracing a modern palette inspired by ‘chichele’ – the Chewa word for ‘salt’ (and its complement, ‘pepper’). This is not a spot for reed and thatch huts! Expect sumptuous linens, handcrafted details and a sense of calm, monochromatic style. Every detail – from the filtered drinking water system to the pure cotton linen – has been considered with comfort and sustainability in mind.
Suites 1 and 2 are linked by what Chichele calls the “safari lounge”, joining the two rooms to create (we’d wager) one of the most elegant family suites in Zambia. There’s a sitting area with lovely views, a private dining area and even internet TV. And while TV is very much not our favourite thing on safari, we’ve all been there with families and a very serious match to watch. However if you need us to give a nod to the team for it to be “broken”, please just let us know and we can make arrangements… The Safari Lounge is also available for guests who’d prefer a little privacy away from the public areas of the lodge- we can book it alongside suite 1 or 2 and it’ll be blocked off from the second suite so you have it to yourself.
Over in the main area, there’s an impressive copper bar along with a well stocked library and an expansive deck complete with firepit and fabulous views, where there will often be a BBQ or freshly made pizzas on offer. A gym, yoga deck, safari spa and a rim‑flow pool that mirrors the sky completes the line up.
What can I do at Chichele Presidential Lodge?
As the game viewing in this area is amongst the best in the South Luangwa, the main activity here is morning and evening game drives, night drives and walking safaris. The latter are a Zambian speciality (children must be over 12 to participate). All are led by expert guides who bring the environment to life. For those seeking something extraordinary, scenic helicopter flights over the Luangwa Valley, rhino de‑horning experiences and K9 anti‑poaching demonstrations can be arranged at an additional cost.
Families at Chichele Presidential Lodge:
Chichele’s guiding team are known for their experience and warmth. If your 5 year old needs to know why hyena poos are white, they can definitely oblige. They’re adept at tailoring activities to younger guests’ interests and the Chichele Cubs program (for children aged 4 to 11 years) has a range of family friendly activities. Keep an open mind as to what your kids will love- scavenger hunting stinky objects can be way more fun than looking at a boring old lion.
Giving back at Chichele Presidential Lodge:
The lodge is powered by clean hydroelectric energy, guests enjoy the rare luxury of air‑conditioning and reliable Wi‑Fi throughout. As part of the greater South Luangwa ecosystem, it also supports anti‑poaching initiatives, wildlife monitoring and community upliftment programmes.
