Extraordinary Africa>Kenya>Laikipia>Walking Wild
We absolutely adore game drives, but there’s something special about getting out of the vehicle, off the beaten track, and exploring the places in between. Being guided by your Maasai hosts, who know the land so intimately, makes this especially magical.
What’s Walking Wild really like?
First off – our guests who choose Walking Wild are doing so for the unforgettable adventure. This is not a place to come if you want wifi (or indeed electricity), king-sized beds, or the luxuries of a hotel room. You’ll sleep in simple netted dome tents, on camp beds with a bedroll. There are long drop loos and canvas bucket showers shared between the camp. Water is heated over the fire. Meals are eaten in the shade of a tree by day, and under the stars by night. While there is a campfire and lanterns in the evening, we’d definitely recommend bringing a head torch.
What can I do at Walking Wild?
Each day you’ll head out on foot, usually early in the morning to beat the heat. On average it’s about 8kms between camps, but here in the Il Ngwesi and Lewa Conservancies, there is plenty of wildlife around so sometimes nature means the plan needs to change. Being on foot makes you incredibly aware of your own small place in the hierarchy of nature, and it’s important to follow the instructions of your guide at all times. As well as big game, you’ll learn about Maasai life from your hosts, and discover so much more about the smaller sights and sounds of the bush than you would from a vehicle. While we’re yet to meet many people that can match the fitness levels of a Maasai morani, guests should be fit and active and prepared for both hot days- water bottles and sun hats are recommended- and chilly nights.
